Relative DT a and viability b values for two competing genotypes measured at low (LD) and high (HD) densities. The two competing genotypes are w = reference strain, w1118 and 555 = DGRP line RAL555. We tested the competitive advantage of a head start in embryonic DT by giving varying levels of advantages to the DGRP strain. Fitness effects of three levels of advantage were tested: no advantage (“0 h”), 4 h advantage (“4 h”), and 7 h advantage (“7 h”). Six replicates were combined for the “0 h” data, while 3–3 replicates gave the “4 h” and “7 h” measurements
