Coarse-grained metabolic networks for subsets of Chlamydiae, Proteobacteria and the union of bacteria (an exact list of organisms of the respective families is found in additional file1, Table S1). Neighbouring reaction nodes in the metabolic networks with the same organism degree (OD) are lumped into one super node, the size of which indicates the number of reaction nodes it contains. Dark to light colouring indicate high to low OD level. Two super nodes are connected of there exist at least one link between two reactions in the respective super nodes. See the Methods section for a more detailed description of the coarse-graining procedure.
